AMEA Project
Advancing Multilink for the European Sky
The AMEA project (ATN Multilink Expansion in European Airspace) is a large-scale demonstrator under the SESAR 3 JU program. Its mission is to accelerate the modernization of aeronautical communications in Europe to address the increasing congestion of current networks.
Strategic Continuity of the ESMA Project
AMEA stands as the direct operational extension of the ESMA project. While ESMA successfully validated the initial capabilities of the SATCOM Iris system and IPS networks, AMEA marks a decisive step forward by moving from technical validation to mass demonstration.
The project leverages ESMA’s achievements (notably the STAND & REG baselines) to deploy a robust Multilink infrastructure.
It ensures the transition toward an architecture capable of managing high data volumes under real-world flight conditions.
Modernization through Multilink and ATN-IPS
To combat the congestion of the traditional VDL Mode 2 link, AMEA introduces a hybrid connectivity solution:
Dual Link Connectivity: Integration of next-generation SATCOM services alongside terrestrial links.
ATN-IPS Architecture: Implementation of the next-generation internet protocol network for aviation, with a major focus on cybersecurity.
Real-world Demonstration: A fleet of 20 aircraft from partner airlines will validate these technologies during a 3-year flight campaign across European airspace.
AMEA’s ambition is clear: transforming communication infrastructure for a safer, more resilient, and more environmentally friendly European sky
